Brownless, Anthony Colling (1817 - 1897)

Born: 19 January 1817  Kent, England.  Died: 3 December 1897.
(Sir) Anthony Colling Brownless came to Australia in 1852 to alleviate his chronic ill health. He was elected physician to the Melbourne Hospital in 1854 and soon after appointed to the University of Melbourne Council. He was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the university from 1858-87.

Born Kent, England, 19 January 1817. Died Melbourne, 3 December 1897. CMG 1888, KCMG 1893. Studied medicine by apprenticeship and at St Bartholemew's Hospital (graduated as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and a licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries 1841). MD, St Andrews 1847. Various appointments and private practice in England; arrived Melbourne 1852; physician, Melbourne Benevolent Asylum from 1853; physician, Melbourne Hospital 1854-66, consulting physician from 1866; extensive private practice; University of Melbourne Council 1855-87, chancellor 1887-97. Responsible for the establishment of the University of Melbourne medical school in 1862. Commemorated by the Brownless Medical Library at the university.
