Smart, Thomas Christie (1816 - 1896)

Surgeon and Politician
Born: 1816  Scotland.  Died: 26 March 1896  Corbelian Bay, Tasmania, Australia.
Thomas Christie Smart was a surgeon at many of Tasmania’s hospitals including the Hospital for the Insane in New Norfolk, the Queen's Asylum for destitute children at New Town and the General Hospital in Hobart. He was also a member and one-time president of the Court of Medical Examiners and a member of the Board of Commissioners for the Cascades Hospital for the Insane. Smart was not only a successful and well regarded medical practitioner, but he was also an adept politician. He spent around five years in the Legislative Council and was Alderman (1868-1869) and Mayor (1870) of Hobart. Some of his papers and records are held by the University of Tasmania Library.
