(Sir) Thomas Peter A. Stuart was the first Professor of Anatomy and Physiology 1883-90, and of Physiology 1890-1920, at the University of Sydney. |

Born Dumfries, Scotland, 20 June 1856. Died Sydney, 29 February 1920. Knighted 1914. Educated University of Edinburgh (MB, CM 1880, MD 1882). Chief demonstrator in physiology, University of Edinburgh 1881-82; professor of anatomy and physiology, University of Sydney 1883-90, professor of physiology 1890-1920; dean of medicine from 1891, Fellow, senate 1883-1920. Honorary secretary, soon chairman, (Royal) Prince Alfred Hospital from 1901. Medical adviser to the government 1893-96; emigration officer for Port Jackson 1893-96; president, Board of Health 1893-96, member of the Board 1896-1920. President of a number of community oranisations including the Royal Society of New South Wales. Largely responsible for the establishment of the school of dentistry at the University of Sydney in 1901 and was the first president of the United Dental Hospital of Sydney 1905. Commemorated by the Anderson Stuart Building, University of Sydney, named in 1960. | ||
