Science patron and Governor

Born: 23 April 1758 Launceston, Cornwall, England. Died: 3 September 1808 England.

Philip Gidley King established the settlement at Norfolk Island in 1787 and was lieutenant-governor from 1789. He was Governor of the colony of New South Wales 1800-6 during which time he promoted exploration and the collection of botanical specimens for Joseph Banks.
