Mitchell, Josiah (1822 - 1887)

Horticulturalist

Born: 1822 Whitehaven, Cumberland, England. Died: August 1887.

Josiah Mitchell leased the Experimental Farm, Royal Park, Melbourne 1863-71, during which time he introduced prairie grass, a native of South America.

Arrived Victoria 1853; Botanic Gardens Melbourne; superintendent general cemetery Melbourne; nurseryman and market gardener Moonee Ponds; leased Experimental Farm, Royal Park 1863-71; agricultural editor of a weekly paper 1871-74; visited New Zealand for health 1874-76; in charge Mt Derrimont shorthorn herd 1876; contested West Bourke LA elections 1880 and later South Gippsland. Foundation member, Farmers' Union; member, West Bourke Agricultural Society.
