Sumeghy, Jozsef Bela (Joe) (1922 - )

Horticulturalist and Agronomist

Born: 1 December 1922 Szeged, Hungary

Jozsef Bela (Joe) Sumeghy migrated to Australia in 1949 as a refugee after World War II. After two years compulsory work with the Department of Immigration in Australia he set about gaining recognition in Australia for his Hungarian University qualifications. He worked with the New South Wales Department of Agriculture for many years. Sumeghy had a number of articles published in scientific journals and also contributed to other publications. This continued after his retirement in 1982.

1954 Commenced work as an Agronomist at the Yanco Experimental Farm for the Horticultural Division of the New South Wales Department of Agriculture

1965 - 1966 Twelve month study leave to complete the "Plant Genetics" course at CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) in Canberra
1968 Commenced work at Hawkesbury Agricultural College
1974 Gave paper at the Second General Congress for the Advancement of Breeding Researches in Asia and Oceania, India
1976 Working tour of USA
1982 Retired
