Gilbert’s ornithological talents were equally impressive, especially his studies on bird behaviour. He was made an honorary member of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU) in 1958 after a fifty year association with them. Gilbert authored many important articles in Emu, the RAOU’s scientific journal, and in other journals such as the Australian Zoologist. He often supplied many of his own illustrations and photographs for he was very talented in those fields as well.
