Assistant, Bogenhausen Observatory, Munich, 1849-50. Seaman, later ship's mate, 1850-54; digger, Bendigo, 1852-54. Geophysics Research Germany 1854-56. Director of the Flagstaff Observatory, Melbourne, 1857-64. Hydrographer to the German Navy, 1872-1903; director of the Hamburg Oceanic Observatory, 1876-1903.
