Miss Annie Sage’s association with Royal College of Nursing, Australia dates back to the 1940s when she and nursing colleagues caught the vision for Australian nurses to engage in post graduate nursing education in their own country. When efforts to persuade institutions of higher education to conduct courses for nurses failed Miss Sage and her colleagues decided to form their own organisation.
Subsequently Miss Sage demonstrated her commitment to the establishment of what is now the Royal College of Nursing, Australia by becoming one of the five foundation members. She was elected as the first President and her photo in this position takes pride of place in the photo gallery of Presidents at the national office of the Royal College of Nursing, Australia in Canberra. The leadership skills she demonstrated during her military nursing career were applied to the development of both the College as a centre of educational excellence, and of leaders in the profession from among the graduates of the post graduate nursing courses. A scholarship is available for members in memory of her outstanding contribution to the birth and growth of the College. This funding perpetuates Miss Sage’s desire for encouraging nurse leaders with high standards of education. The Australian Nursing History Project of the School of Postgraduate Nursing, University of Melbourne, has taken a leadership role in facilitating the development of historical information about nurses and nursing in Australia. They have assisted in the preparation of the entries listed below. For further information see: http://www.nursing.unimelb.edu.au/anhp/anhppros.htm. | ||||
